The Awakening of Alexis - Part one

I knew that it would happen, I tried to deny it but deep down I always knew. This is my confession.

I guess to understand you will have to hear a bit about me: I’m Alexis. I was 24 at the time and worked my ass off to get where was. I ate, slept and breathed my work. When Shane joined the company he was 36 and sexy as hell, but he knew it. I despised him and he didn’t make any secrets about not liking me either. He’d make smart ass comments to me with every given opportunity and try to undermine every little thing that I did.

We trudged through, working along side each other as best we could. The management team wasn’t the least bit happy with us since they were all about promoting a successful team environment. The e mail arrived: supervisor team building- all supervisors must attend with the partner you have been assigned. Of course, Shane and I were paired together.

Team building was to begin the following weekend and my husband was not happy about it. “For fucks sake Alexis, you need to learn to tell them no. They can’t make you go away- don’t they know you’ve got a husband?”

That was the last thing I needed, aggravation at home before I had to go away for a weekend with this jerk. I met my husband when I was only 16. He was 28, twelve years older than me. You can imagine how well that went down with the parents but I always had a thing for the older man, even then, so it was a match made in heaven. Right up until we married, then it went a lil pear shaped. He lost all interest in sex and when we did have sex he saw to his own pleasure, and well, mine didn’t matter. We had drifted along for the last few years more out of habit than anything else. Of course I missed sex but I focused my frustration on my work. That’s how I ended up a plant supervisor at the young age of 24.

The working week passed in a blur and all too soon the team building trip was here. To make matters worse, we had to drive there. Being the stereotypical twat, Shane made a song and dance about it, insisting that he do all the driving, not that I minded all that much. It gave me a chance to read over some paperwork I’d brought with me and I could fake falling asleep so I didn‘t have to talk to him if things got awkward. We loaded our bags into the back of the hire car and set off.

This was going to be a long journey. Neither of us wanted to speak first so I broke the tension by turning on the radio. I started singing along with it under my breath. We were driving through the countryside when, as is so typical in Ireland, it started to rain, pouring down, turning the sky grey and making the road slick. Shane pulled the car into the roadside and rubbed his temples. “Christ, what a day for traveling huh?”

“Yea unbelievable, it’s almost bouncing off the road huh? How far off the hotel do you think we are?” I asked.

“About an hour yet anyway.”

Fucking hell, another hour with this jerk, I thought. It must have shown on my face because he snarled at me, “Yeah Alexis you’re not exactly my first choice of a traveling companion either, believe me. I didn’t exactly ask for this goddamn trip. You make it painfully obvious at work that you think that I am a waste of space, why would you leave this trip thinking anything other than that? Let’s just be civil to each other and try to make the best of this situation.”

I sat back reeling from the unseen verbal ambush, then shock turned to anger. “Me?” I questioned. “You have the nerve to think that I wanted this trip, yeah I’ll admit we’re not the best matched pair to send away for this but I’m not here to make your life hell on this and if anyone has an attitude problem here it’s you, with your snide comments, rude remarks and always undermining every little thing I do.”

“Yeah well,” he stammered, “if you weren’t so fucking aloof and unattainable I wouldn’t spend my work days thinking about doing this…” and before I could ask what he meant, he leaned across the small space and had caught my mouth in the hottest kiss, his lips forcing mine apart. The intensity of the kiss made me swoon and moan into his mouth before I realized what I was doing. I hated this guy, he hated me, but the thought didn’t stay in my head for long as his hands ran up the length of my spine, settled on the back of my neck, and pulled me closer.
