| The fire sparked and sputtered, raging across it’s supplied fuel, safely within the fire place of the lone house, deep in the Colorado countryside. Light from the fire spilled out on to the glistening snow, patterns and flickers of orange and yellow, illuminating ground around the sturdy house. A lone man sat; his back to the light and warmth of the fire. He sipped a cup of coffee and stared out into the night. The cool blue light of the stars and moon caused the landscape to look eerie and haunted. It was breathtaking how every plant had a life and shape of its own, reserved only for the night. The man sighed, the bare skin of his back warmed by the fire, his mind hardly registering for the thoughts that swirled in his subconscious. He was pulled out of his reverie as a small click from upstairs marked the entrance of his wife. She walked down the steps to the living room, her feet bare and a long, silk robe wrapped around her. Fiery red hair framed her face, cut short to her chin. Despite the fact that she had been sleeping, not a strand of hair was amiss. She padded up behind her husband and sat down against him, wrapping her arms around his muscular frame. “Hey there,” she said, her voice still holding on to elements of grogginess, “Can’t sleep tonight, Aaron?” “No,” he said, grabbing his wife’s petite forearms and drawing her close, “Too much on my mind.” She smiled sadly and kissed the back of Aaron’s head. He closed his eyes and reveled in the feel of his wife’s body. He realized then, that she would always be his anchor; she would always be able to push out his bad thoughts, his doubts, and his worst emotions. He should have known that her mere presence and comfort would be enough to ease his troubled mind. “Thinking about your brother?” she asked, though she knew the answer. “Yeah,” he replied, “I miss him, Alice. I wish he could be home with us this year.” She nodded, burying her head against his back. She didn’t speak, just let him continue. “I know he can’t be; I know that’s asking a lot. I just hope he is safe.” Alice chuckled, not meaning to demean her husband but simply because he sounded so much like his brother Calvin. “Calvin said the same thing, you know,” she said, “When we were in High School, he would always tell everyone how much he missed you during the holidays. He was especially scared when you were sent to liberate Baghdad.”
