Well, I think I will share the bits I have on this - from my point of view:

First of all.. I believe the term orgy is [nowadays?] somehow blurred with the swingers party term..

That being said - I am pretty sure the 'pure' orgy parties are still taking place - somehow - somewhere.. reserved for some circles or continued in tradition.. [orgy tradition, how about that? *smile*]

My take is - swingers party are pretty well represented - I've noticed ads and emails all around actually in North America.. and they seem to be pretty open as long as certain rules are followed. I recall I had a chat a few years ago with another guy who is into the scene and basically it boils down to this:

1. The party host [which is usually a couple] - defines the rules. That is.. if you are allowed to go alone [and seems a bit selfish for everyone else who comes with their partner] or you must bring someone with you to share.

2. There is pretty much no touching unless agreed to - meaning, as desert mentioned above - you have to ask to be able to join.. and of course, anyone can say no to anyone..

3. Pushy people get booted and banned from further events - no one is feeling comfortable with that kind of attitude.

4. I have no idea what the 'safety' rules are - but I can only guess everyone is playing safe or.. risk their lives? I can't imagine someone not playing safe - in such a scenario - nowadays. Maybe the party host has a say in this as well.. ?

5. I also recall there are two kinds of parties: first, more like an initiation - where new people are accepted and the rules are more strict - not much hardcore or very little.. and this is where the selection happens for the second type - which are more intimate and pure hardcore.. with people that get to know each other between them.. pretty well.

Other than that - hmm - let's see - I also recall another talk with a guy who got a ticket from his girlfriend to go on a cruise.. he had no idea what he was getting into - turned out it was one of the 'Clothing optional' resorts - and the cruise was very specific into bringing people together for nudism/sex. I think there would be something absolutely wonderful about finally breaking the barriers of ownership or authorisation when it comes to sex.
