Default Favorite Storybooks as a kid?

What was your favorite book as a very young child or as an older child and why? Would you tell us a bit about it?

Before I could read, my favorite book was Pitidoe The Colormaker, by Glen Dines.
I knew each pages lines by heart and took it out from the library every time I went, which was often.
It is a sorcerer's apprentice type of story, only here it is a wizard.
Pitidoe tries to use the spell 'recipe' book and mixes up the wrong things, accidently taking all color out of the world.
Then he tries to fix it and turns the world purple. Eventually everything gets straightened out with the magical wizard's help. But the beauty of this book is the words are all in rhyme, and they only use 4 colors in the delightful pages to convey all the vivid concepts.

As I grew up, my favorite book was Caddie Woodlawn, by Carol Ryrie Brink.
It is the story of a tomboyish young girl, who is full of energy, spunk, and resourcefulness. She loves adventure and the outdoors, and I am convinced I have internalized parts of her personality as I have grown older.

I discovered that one when I had my kids, and loved it even as an adult.

My sister always loved The Man Who Lost His Head, by Claire Huchet Bishop and Robert McCloskey.

Click here to view full size

It is the story of a man who goes to the country fair and manages to lose his head--literally!

He has to describe all of his features to a young boy, who offers to help look for it.

Towards the end, the boy punches him, knocking him out, and he wakes up from his dream--head intact!

It has delightful pictures and captures the child's imagination with creativity and flair.
