| Having Breakfast at the Diner |

| The eastern horizon had just started to lighten with the sun. It cast a beautiful sheet of colors across the dark sky. Jamie stared at it as long as she could; wishing she didn’t have to work. The growl of her stomach brought her out of her reverie. “Damn, should have ate before I left,” she said, walking toward the back door to the Diner in which she worked. Jamie had just been promoted to Kitchen Manager and it had caused her nothing but grief. Long days and early mornings were taking there toll. The feeling of her hungry stomach was a testament to that. Sounds of footsteps took her focus away from her thoughts and stomach. A tall, young man walked up behind her. He was wearing a simple gray t-shirt that showcased his muscular upper body and jeans “You must be Janet’s son,” said Jamie, shifting her keys to her left hand and extending her right. “That’s right, I’m Kyle,” he said, shaking the offered hand, “And you must be my boss Jamie?” Jamie nodded, forcing a smile. In any job she had ever been in, the one thing she hated most is when she was placed in charge of the family members of her boss or higher ups. None of them ever had an inkling of what to do. She sighed in side, prepared to walk this young man through baby steps to get him to cook right. Jamie turned the keys and opened the employee entrance. Kyle walked in and Jamie followed; closing and locking the door behind her. A nearby clock read 5:30 AM, letting Jamie count the time before opening. “Okay, we have until 1:30 to get this list done,” said Jaime, ripping the list in two and giving Kyle the other half, “You take that half, I’ll take this. All recipes are in the book located on top of the roll oven. If you have any questions, please ask.” “Okay,” said Kyle. Jamie watched him set about working. He moved with practiced ease around the kitchen, as if he was aware of every thing's place. He sat out ingredients for the first item on his list, a set of chocolate marble swirl cheesecakes and he did so without the cook book. Jamie was about to reprimand him but noticed he was pulling out all the right ingredients. Jamie shook her head and went to work on her own list. It was an hour later, when Kyle stopped. Jamie continued stirring a large pot of mashed potatoes. Kyle pulled out the cookbook and examined something. “Jamie?” he asked. “Yes Kyle,” she replied, not stopping her mixing. “In your Lemon Meringue pie, you call for 1/3 a cup of lemon juice and finely grated zest from a small lemon,” he was saying, “If I bump up the mixture to ½ cup and a medium sized lemon, the pie will taste better.” Jamie stopped, not used to someone, especially someone new questioning a recipe, “My recipe is fine. Make it as it says.” “Jamie, give me a chance, if you don’t like my additions, I’ll start from scratch and make it your way.”
